What is RBT?

An RBT helps people, especially children with autism or developmental problems, advance and control their behaviors. They rely on ABA methods, which are designed to better individuals’ abilities to communicate, spend time socially and lead regular lives.

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is in charge of designing each client’s RBT treatment plan. It is the RBT’s responsibility to do those activities, work directly with each client to teach useful skills, boost good behaviors and keep track of their development. You can think of them as people who help make a person’s day far better.

You need to take part in a 40-hour training, demonstrate your skills on an evaluation and pass the BACB exam to become an RBT. If assisting people is very important to you, a position as a social worker can be quite rewarding.

RBT Task List

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Task List was developed by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) to show the responsibilities and information RBTs are required to know for offering ABA services. The BACB has identified these as the six top content areas on the RBT Task List (2nd Edition). RBTs are given specific roles at work, which are overseen by a BCBA or a BCaBA.

A. Measurement

RBTs collect and analyse data to inform interventions and monitor progress.

• A-3: Implement discontinuous measurement procedures (e.g., partial and whole interval recording, momentary time sampling).

C. Skill Acquisition

• D-4: Implement differential reinforcement procedures (e.g., DRA, DRO).

E. Documentation and Reporting

RBTs maintain accurate records and communicate effectively.

• E-1: Effectively communicate with a supervisor in an ongoing manner.
• E-2: Actively seek clinical direction from a supervisor in a timely manner.
• E-3: Report other variables that might affect the client (e.g., illness, relocation, medication).
• E-4: Generate objective session notes to document the client’s performance.
• E-5: Comply with applicable legal, regulatory, and workplace data collection, storage, transportation, and documentation requirements.

F. Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice

RBTs adhere to ethical and professional standards.

• F-1: Describe the BACB’s RBT supervision requirements and the role of RBTs in the service-delivery system.
• F-2: Respond appropriately to feedback and maintain or improve performance accordingly.
• F-3: Maintain professional boundaries (e.g., avoid dual relationships, conflicts of interest, social media contacts).
• F-4: Maintain client dignity.

RBT Eligibility

You can become a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) if you satisfy the requirements outlined by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB).

• Being at least 18 is necessary.
• Be in possession of a high school diploma or an equivalency (such as a GED). A bachelor’s degree is not necessary, so this role is within the reach of many who want to work in ABA.
• Go through and pass a criminal records check.
• Take a 40-hour training course on RBT which uses the RBT Task List created by the BACB.
• Complete a test of skill overseen by a BCBA or BCaBA (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst).

RBT Exam Format

• Pilot Questions: The 10 unscored questions are indistinguishable from scored ones and are used to evaluate future exam content.

RBT Scoring and Passing Criteria

• Scoring: Only the 75 scored questions contribute to the final score.
• Passing Score: Determined by a scaled scoring system (varies by exam form, typically around 80-85% correct).
• Results: Provided immediately after the exam at the testing center or within 24 hours for online proctoring.
